  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onion and garlic, sauté until fragrant and translucent.
  3. Add diced tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Blend the soup until smooth using an immersion blender or regular blender.
  6. Stir in sugar, then season with salt and pepper.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
